THURAYA SATELLITE TELECOMMUNICATIONS COMPANY -- Hughes Space and Communications International, Inc., will build a regional mobile satellite system (MSS) for Thuraya Satellite Telecommunications Company, which is owned by prominent organizations in the region. This will be the first and largest mobile satellite system in the region (the Arab world., Indian subcontinent, Central Asia and eastern Europe including Turkey). It is valued at US$1 billion, with a coverage area encompassing nearly 2 billion people. The Thuraya system, utilizing a Hughes body-stabilized satellite, ground stations and mobile telephones, is scheduled to begin commercial services in the year 2000. Named after the star cluster in the Taurus constellation, Thuraya is planned to provide regional mobile personal communications services. Its purpose is to economically extend the reach of mobile communications within the coverage area and to share the benefits of satellite communications systems with the national public telecommunications operators.
