A BRIDGE IN SPACE - A satellite industry team led by Boeing Satellite Systems, Inc. (BSS), has been selected to build the Wideband Gapfiller Satellite (WGS) system, a communication system that will support the warfighter. The system will incorporate one or more Boeing 702 satellites such as the one shown here. WGS is a firm, fixed-price award with an initial value of $160.3 million and a potential total value of $1.3 billion including options for as many as six Boeing 702 satellites and their associated spacecraft and payload control equipment. With initial launch expected in early 2004, WGS will serve as a bridge to the Department of Defense's Advanced Wideband Satellite system, a high-capacity tactical communications system currently planned for 2008.
