ST. LOUIS, Oct. 11, 2007 -- The first Boeing-built Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., on Oct. 10, 2007. The WGS constellation will provide a 10-fold increase in telecommunications capacity over the satellites it will replace. In the below photo, the Boeing 702 model spacecraft is loaded into a fairing at Cape Canaveral. The fairing assembly sits on top of the Atlas V launch vehicle and protects the satellite while the rocket travels through the Earth's atmosphere on its way to orbit.
