Space Flight Awareness

Above and Beyond Award

In April 2004, Space Flight Awareness initiated a new type of award -- the Above and Beyond. As one of the first recipients or nominators, we would like to request your comments about the award.

The award is described below and followed by specific questions. This award was created to recognize individuals or groups that expend extraordinary effort to develop real time solutions to problems blocking critical schedules or threatening a mission milestone. This can include long hours, expediting processes, and developing new solutions to immediate program needs. This award is to be presented while the work is on going. It is to be used to applaud the individual(s) as they work toward resolution of the problem.

Eligibility and Nomination Process

All employees and groups of employees involved in human space flight are eligible candidates to receive this award. Anyone may nominate and the site SFA administrator may approve the award with concurrence from the employee's management. Timeliness is essential in the presentation of this award. The goal would be a 24-hour turn around from nomination to presentation.

The award consists of:

Award Presentation Process. The certificate may be signed by a company president, vice president, a director of an organization, or an astronaut and should be presented by the person who signed the award, if possible. Awards should be presented in the workplace. Senior management should be invited. Should the work being sited for recognition require long work days, an effort should be made to present the award during the extended portion of the recipients work day.
