Transitioning
You've just been given your layoff notice... Now what?
The four emotional stages of job loss
- SHOCK: A disbelief that it has happened
- ANGER: A feeling of betrayal
- GRIEF: Sadness over leaving friends and co-workers
- ACCEPTANCE: Willing and able to move on with your life
Job loss
Everyone does not have the same range of questions, reactions and concerns, consider the following:
- You are a victim of the times
- It's not your fault
- The stress and shock you feel is real
- Everything may become exaggerated
- Maintain family communications -- as a family, you'll pull together and survive.
- Anger is natural and needed -- but don't burn any bridges behind you
- The best sounding boards are people who understand
- Career Management and Transition Services staff members are able to listen to your feelings in an objective, non-judgmental way
- Take control
- Don't cut off your friends -- they can be one of the best sources for finding a new job
