The Boeing computing environment is probably one of the most interesting in the world. Historically, most of our revenue came from manufacturing airplanes. Today, we expect most of our future revenue to come from the sales of aircraft-related information products and services. To produce these new products and services, Boeing needs more information technologists than ever before. Computing systems and processes are utilized at each stage of our business, from product development through production and after-market support. The information we process ranges from engineering analysis models to payroll and timekeeping. IT specialists are on the cutting edge of each technology as we work to achieve productivity gains and new business via computing solutions.

Boeing's IT installations are known throughout the industry. We are one of the largest corporate Web users in the world. Boeing has a company-wide IT process to pick the best computing tools it can. In fact, we have an entire organization devoted to the task. The software products and programming languages we use include Java, C++, CORBA, CATIA, Visual Basic, SQL Server, Lisp, Perl, Prolog, Python, VC++, Oracle, DB2, and Teradata among many others. We're constantly introducing and evaluating new tools and improving system design and construction.

Then there are the tools we've developed ourselves. EASY5 is a family of software tools used to model, simulate and analyze dynamic systems. Sold worldwide, EASY5 offers all the tools necessary to support your own real-time lab using custom-built VME-based equipment. Engineers use EASY5 to solve modeling, analysis and design problems in mechanical, electrical, aeronautic/astronautic, hydraulic, fluid power, pneumatic, thermal and control systems.

The Boeing-developed Sparse Optimal Control Software family contains two advanced software packages. Sparse Optimal Control Software is general-purpose software for solving optimal control problems. Applications include trajectory optimization, chemical process control and machine tool path definition. Sparse Nonlinear Programming exploits state-of-the-art sparse linear algebra technology to solve very large optimization problems by orders of magnitude faster than traditional methods. Applications with more than 100,000 variables and constraints now can be solved efficiently on desktop computers.
