At first glance, the modified 1959 Cushman golf cart, with an orange stripe, is unimpressive. When people discover the history of the cart, however, their perspectives change dramatically.
In September of 1962, President John F. Kennedy visited the McDonnell Aircraft factory in St. Louis. Board Chairman and CEO James McDonnell chauffeured the president through the Mercury and Gemini space programs and around the factory via a golf cart.
During his visit, Kennedy saw the progress and shook hands with employees, all while riding aboard McDonnell’s golf cart.
More than 50 years later, the Boeing Employees Community Fund provided the financial support to restore the cart, which had been damaged in a flood and kept in storage. Yesterday, the St. Louis Air and Space Museum unveiled the refurbished cart.
