Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) Operations Support
As part of the Commonwealth of Australia's Commercial Support Program (CSP), Boeing Australia is contracted to provide engineering support services to the scientists and researchers at the Defence Science and Technology Organisation's (DSTO) Aeronautical and Maritime Research Laboratory (AMRL) facility, located in Melbourne. Approximately 45 Boeing Australia staff are employed on the site and over 4 primary support areas:
- Mechanical design and engineering
- Electronics design and manufacture
- Applied imaging and photography
- Manufacturing and model making
These low-cost, high-quality services are also available to external commercial customers.
Mechanical design and engineering
The Engineering Design cell specialises in system and component design from highest level concepts down to detail design level. Capabilities include the following:
- Mechanical design (2D & 3D)
- Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
- Conceptual analysis & design
- Feasibility studies
- Graphic & publication design
- Graphic terrain modelling
Electronics design & manufacture
The Electronics Design & Manufacturing team has extensive experience in prototype design of electronic systems and offers expertise in the following areas:
- Analogue & digital design
- Micro controller system development
- Schematic capture, simulation & PCB Layout
- Service & repair of electronic equipment
- PCB fabrication & assembly
- Instrument manufacture
- Programming in C++, Visual Basic & Authorware
Applied imaging and photography
The Photography and Applied Imaging group provides a diverse range of photographic services in both scientific and publicity/display formats. The group is able to reproduce images using digital video/cine and still photographic (film and digital formats) techniques.
Video capability extends to:
- Video production, editing & copying using digital video format.
- High speed imaging in cine & video
- Image & motion analysis coupled with design of imaging techniques.
Still photography capabilities encompass:
- Display & publicity image reproduction using film & digital image processes. Outputs include O/H transparency & slide presentation.
- Scientific photography including UV, IR, photomacro/micrography.
- Image manipulation & scanning to CD
Manufacturing and model making
The Manufacturing & Modelling cell has an extensive range of machining and fabrication capabilities. The group specialises in the manufacture of complex multifunctional equipment utilising the following capabilities:
- Computer-aided and conventional machine tools comprising NC machining centres and NC lathes. DNC link to each machining centre.
- Internal & external grinding
- Sheet metal fabrication
- Welding (Tig, Mig, Metallic arc)
- Actuated wind tunnel models in both composite and metallic materials.
- Manufacturing capabilities in a range of composite materials including carbon fibre, fibreglass, wood and acrylic.
