Air-Launch Harpoon (1979)

Work began on the sea-skimming Harpoon anti-ship missile in 1967 with wind tunnel tests starting in 1969. The initial U.S. Navy contract for development and testing was awarded in 1971. In development tests in 1974 and 1975, Harpoon achieved a high target hit average. Harpoon became operational on U.S. warships in 1977, and air-launch Harpoon missiles went into service in 1979.
