Boeing is the prime contractor for
the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) program because it is
uniquely organized to respond to the government’s commitment
to develop and deploy effective missile defenses. Missile Defense
Systems has been organized to combine all of the company’s missile
defense programs into a single division.
This ensures a strong focus is brought on solving missile defense
problems and that decades of experience in systems integration,
program management, and technology development are leveraged
to the benefit of our customers.
Boeing Missile Defense Systems combines its leading role in
the Ground-based Midcourse Defense program, the emerging Ballistic
Missile Defense System Testbed, and the Airborne Laser program
with its expertise in integrating and supplying key components
of other missile defense programs, including Patriot Advanced
Capability-3, Navy Theater Wide, Theater High Altitude Area Defense,
and co-production of the U.S.-Israel Arrow interceptor.
Besides missile defense, the division is engaged in related
activities in air defense and cruise missile defense. For example,
Avenger, with its turret-mounted Stinger missile and slew-to-cue
capability, is the U.S. Army’s premier shoot-on-the move air
defense weapon.
Finally, the division encompasses research and development activities
in advanced technology concepts and applications. For example,
Lasers and Electro-Optic Systems (L&EOS), which is part of the
division, provides expertise in directed energy technologies
and operates the U.S. Air Force’s Starfire Optical Range. Boeing-SVS,
a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Boeing Company, is also aligned
with L&EOS under the division.
