This summer marked the first year of operations
for Boeing Integrated Defense Systems, an organization created
with the goal of supporting the customer and the transformation
of the military. Looking back over the past 12 months, we can
see that the company, in tandem with our customer, has taken significant
steps toward achieving that vision. But aerospace is, and has
always been, not about looking to the past, but focusing on the
future. And, at IDS, that’s exactly what we’re doing.
Our efforts on transformational, high-tech programs such as Future
Combat Systems are designed to help the U.S. Army meet its enduring
need to protect the peace by enabling a lighter, more agile and
connected fighting force. A key component of the transformation
agenda includes integrating existing and future weapons systems
into the networks that will get the right information to the right
people at the right time. By networking information, platforms
and people, we will change the way wars are fought in the future.
In the future it will not be about who has the most tanks, ships
and planes, but about who can utilize information and knowledge
and turn that knowledge into decisions and actions. It means that
every soldier will be a part of a network that seamlessly links
together all of the assets within the battlespace and allows them
to work as one. Looking to the future, we are prepared to help
the armed forces develop the technology and the systems they need
to meet the increasing demands of battle management that have
become more complex and sophisticated. Whether it is precision-guided
weapons such as the Small Diameter Bomb, an improved fighter aircraft
or innovative, unmanned vehicles, such as the X-45 Joint Unmanned
Combat Air System (J-UCAS) or new communications projects such
as the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS), we continue to reach
beyond today’s solutions.
In this issue of All Systems Go, you will read more about how
the men and women of Boeing have responded to the challenges of
the past and, more importantly, how they are working hand-in-hand
with our customer to answer the challenges of tomorrow. |
