When
the 3rd Squadron, 6th Cavalry Brigade arrived at Pusan Harbor
earlier this year, it became the second U.S. Army Apache Longbow
battalion to be based in South Korea. This storied battalion is
stationed at Camp Humphries and joins the allied forces that have
been protecting freedom along the border of North and South Korea
for half a century.
Seventeen Apache Longbows were ferried from the United States
aboard the Green Point, a giant cargo ship designed to move automobiles
around the world. Because of the ship’s size and design,
only minor reassembly was required once the aircraft were pulled
onto the dock.
Once
unloaded from the ship, the Apache Longbows were removed from
their protective shrink-wrap cocoons, reassembled, flight-tested
and then flown to their new home at Camp Humphries.
The first flight of Apache Longbows occurred during a light rain
and heavy mist.
Once in place, the soldiers of the 3rd Squadron, 6th Cavalry
Brigade Regiment began preparing for their assignment, aware that
they are a key part of South Korea’s frontline defense.
