Naval Reserve Orders 9th C-40A Clipper
BY CHICK RAMEY

C-40A ClipperLate last year, the U.S. Naval Reserve signed a contract with Boeing to add a ninth aircraft in 1997 to its C-40A fleet. The Navy began purchasing C-40A aircraft to replace its aging fleet of 29 C-9B Skytrain aircraft used to transport both cargo and passengers around the world.

According to Mark Rogers, Boeing Derivative Airplane Programs (DAP) director, the recent contract is the result of outstanding teamwork between Boeing and the Naval Reserve.

"It obviously helps to have a fantastic aircraft, too," Rogers said. "We hope to be able to continue our teaming relationship long into the future. Boeing is proud to be partners with the Naval Reserve and able to contribute to its important mission."

Currently, the Naval Reserve provides 100 percent of the Navy's worldwide in-theater medium and heavy airlift. That's where the C-40A comes in.

The "Clipper" is already setting new standards in performance, low-cost operations and reliability for the Reserve's fleet logistics support mission. A military version of the 737-700, the C-40A is certified to operate in an all-passenger (121), all cargo (up to eight pallets) or a "combi" (up to three pallets and 70 passengers) configuration.

With its superior range and performance, 777-type flight deck, updated avionics and quiet fuel-efficient engines, Rogers said the 737-700 aircraft increases the capability for rapid response to meet the fleet's airlift requirements.

Manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes in Renton, Wash., the aircraft then move on to the company's Integrated Defense Systems facility in Wichita, Kan., where FAA-certified kits are installed to provide the "combi" capability.

Boeing's DAP organization delivered the first C-40A to the Naval Reserve in April 2001 and to date has delivered eight aircraft. Boeing will deliver the ninth in 2006.
