The U.S. Navy awards Boeing a five-year performance-based logistics contract valued at $995 million for the F/A-18E/F Integrated Readiness Support Teaming program. "This contract allows the Navy and Boeing to continue providing the proven F/A-18 sustainment that has become a model for system support," says Pat Finneran, Boeing vice president and general manager, Logistics Support Systems.

Boeing reports that it recorded 1,002 net commercial airplane orders during 2005, setting a new Boeing record for total orders in a single year. Three airplane programs -- the 737, 777 and 787 programs -- also achieved individual records, with net orders of 569 for 737s, 154 for 777s and 235 for 787s.

Boeing and Air India announce an agreement for 68 airplanes valued at more than $11 billion at list prices. Air India's order consists of 23 777s, including eight 777-200LR (Longer Range) Worldliners and 15 777-300ERs (Extended Range), and 27 787-8 Dreamliners. Air India Express, a wholly owned subsidiary of Air India, will receive 18 Next-Generation 737-800s.

Boeing launches the 737-700ER (Extended Range), following an order conversion from All Nippon Airways for two airplanes. The 737-700ER has the longest range capability of any 737 commercial family member, and is able to serve new nonstop, point-to-point routes profitably. ANA exercised rights to substitute 737-700s with 737-700ERs. The two 737-700ERs are part of a larger order announced June 23, 2003, for 45 737-700s.

Boeing Capital Corp., instrumental in creating and ratifying the treaty, says the treaty is important to Boeing because it reduces the cost and risk for financiers of Boeing aircraft and helps stimulate new aircraft financing worldwide.

Moody's Investors Service upgrades its ratings on debt securities issued by Boeing and Boeing Capital, citing the company's strong cash flow, balance sheet and cash on hand. Boeing Corporate Finance and Banking Assistant Treasurer Ruud Roggekamp says, "Not only is this further endorsement of Boeing's financial position and outlook, it also could help reduce our financing costs for debt and letters of credit." Moody's now has an A2 rating on the company's senior unsecured debt and a Prime-1 rating on its short-term securities.

Included in this agreement is the first 737-900ER order by an aircraft leasing company. GECAS will take delivery of the 30 firm airplanes from 2008 through 2010.

Walt Skowronski, president of Boeing Capital Corp., tells members of the International Society of Transport Aircraft Trading that airplanes, not airlines, are determining the future of aircraft financing. Skowronski says financing is rapidly becoming more asset-driven and less dependent upon airline credits, which means that "financiers are no longer looking at the health of an airline as the primary driver to determine whether or not to make an investment. Instead, they are relying significantly more on the long-term value of the airplane asset itself to secure their investment."
