Spanish carrier Air Europa converts purchase rights into orders for 16 Boeing Next-Generation 737-800 airplanes. The airplanes are valued at approximately $1 billion at list prices and will be delivered between 2010 and 2014. Air Europa will use these new airplanes on domestic routes within Spain, including the Balearic and Canary islands, as well as on European and North African routes.

Boeing announces a donation to the National Air and Space Museum in continued support of the museum's education and preservation efforts. The $15 million gift is the single largest corporate gift ever presented to the Smithsonian Institution. In recognition of the donation, the central structure at the Udvar-Hazy Center will be known as the Boeing Aviation Hangar.

Laurette Koellner is named president of Boeing International, replacing Tom Pickering, who retires May 1. Rudy deLeon, who leads Boeing operations in Washington, D.C., also announces his retirement, effective June 30. Tod Hullin is named senior vice president for Public Policy and Communications and assumes deLeon's responsibilities while continuing to lead the Communications function.

Boeing submits its proposal to develop and deliver eight long-range maritime reconnaissance and antisubmarine warfare aircraft to the Indian Navy. Boeing is offering a variant of its P-8A Multi-mission Maritime Aircraft, which is currently in development for the U.S. Navy. The proposed aircraft would provide India with a significantly improved maritime patrol and reconnaissance capability.

Commercial Airplanes achieves firm configuration of the 737 Multi-mission Maritime Aircraft that -- when delivered to Integrated Defense Systems in 2008 -- will be known as the P-8A for the U.S. Navy. Firm configuration means the airplane's basic requirements (such as systems, interiors, airframe and propulsion) are defined, and detailed design work can begin.

Chinese President Hu Jintao meets with Jim McNerney, Boeing chairman, president and CEO, and Alan Mulally, president and CEO of Commercial Airplanes, and addresses employees at Boeing's assembly plant in Everett, Wash. The visit is part of Hu's four-day trip to the United States. China is one of the largest markets for jetliners outside the United States, with a need for more than 2,600 airplanes over the next 20 years.

Southwest Airlines converts options into orders for 79 Next-Generation 737-700s. Airplanes covered by the converted options will be delivered between 2007 and 2012 in a deal worth approximately $4.5 billion at list prices.

A Boeing Delta II rocket launches two NASA spacecraft from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. The Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations spacecraft was deployed about one hour into the mission, followed by CloudSat about 35 minutes later.

AirTran Airways, the Atlanta- and Orlando-based low-cost carrier, orders 24 Next-Generation 737-700s. AirTran Airways converted options for 14 airplanes for delivery in 2008 and ordered 10 additional 737-700s for delivery in 2010. The estimated value of the order, at list prices, is $1.3 billion.

Boeing delivers its final two 717 airplanes to Midwest Airlines and AirTran Airways in a ceremony before thousands of employees, retirees and dignitaries in Long Beach, Calif. The deliveries conclude commercial airplane production in Southern California that began in the 1920s with the Douglas Aircraft Co. The 717 program, which produced 156 airplanes, pioneered breakthrough business and manufacturing processes for Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

Boeing, International Lease Finance Corp. and Aeromexico, Mexico's largest airline, announce that the carrier will operate three 787 Dreamliners, making it the first Latin American airline to incorporate the mostly composite airplane into its fleet. Boeing and its partner Fuji Heavy Industries celebrate the start of major assembly for the first 787 Dreamliner. FHI begins to assemble the center wing section at its new factory in Handa, Japan, near Nagoya. When the structure is complete, it will be flown from Japan to Charleston, S.C., where Global Aeronautica will integrate it with other 787 structures before sending it on to Everett, Wash.

Boeing successfully tests its Laser Joint Direct Attack Munition weapon system against a moving target. During the test at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., a U.S. Air Force F-16 flying at an altitude of 20,000 feet (6,095 meters) scored a direct hit on an armored personnel carrier moving at 25 mph (40 kph). Using its onboard targeting pod, the F-16 laser-designated the APC and released the 500-pound LJDAM approximately four miles from the target.
