First 747
The first Boeing 747, named the City of Everett, was completed at the Everett, Wash., factory on Sept. 30, 1968. Pan American World Airways, the first 747 customer, began flying 747s on the New York-London route on Jan. 21, 1970. By July 1970, a million passengers had flown on 747s. The early 747s were 747-100s, which have evolved into today's high-technology 747-400, the world's fastest subsonic jetliner. Of the 1,100 747s in service today, only about 85 are 747-100s; more than 500 are 747-400s.
