Lufthansa Orders Four More Boeing 747-400s SEATTLE, Sept. 21, 1995 -- Lufthansa German Airlines today announced an order of four Boeing 747-400s, bringing the German flag carrier's total orders for the newest version of the jumbo jet to 23. The new airplanes, valued at approximately $600 million, will be delivered in the first half of 1997. Lufthansa currently has 18 of the 747-400 model in its fleet and is slated to receive its next 747-400 in March 1996. Today's announcement comes after a tough competition and an exhaustive internal analysis by Lufthansa, which evaluated both the Boeing 747-400 and the Airbus A340. The decision to buy four 747-400s was based on the Boeing jumbo jet's superior economics and its position as the industry leader in operating efficiency and passenger comfort. Lufthansa said it will use the four new 747-400s to accommodate traffic growth. During the first six months of 1995, Lufthansa experienced an 11.3 percent increase in traffic as compared to the same time period the previous year. The order book for the 747-400 now stands at 397. 1995 orders for the entire Boeing Commercial Airplane Group family of airplanes total 219. |
