Boeing Announces Production, Employment Updates

SEATTLE, Aug. 27, 1996 - The Boeing Company announced today that the production rate for its new 777 jet transport will be increased from five airplanes per month to seven per month in July 1997.

In addition, the company's 1996 employment forecast also is being increased by approximately 5,000 to an expected year end total of approximately 118,350. The 5,000 employment increase announced today is in addition to the 8,200 increase announced earlier this year, bringing the 1996 employment forecast increase to approximately 13,200. Total Boeing employment on January 1, 1996 was 105,180.

Phil Condit, Boeing president and CEO, said, "Today's announced production rate increase is in response to continued strong market demand for the 777, and the employment increase reflects today's rate change as well as staffing requirements for product development activities."

Total projected employment change by major Boeing location in 1996 are increases of approximately 9,800 in Washington state; 3,300 in Wichita, Kansas; and 400 in other Boeing locations. In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania the total projected employment change in 1996 is a decrease of approximately 300.
