Boeing Sponsors Space Academy For Teachers

SEAL BEACH, Calif., July 28, 1997 - Twenty-four elementary and high school teachers from across the United States are attending Space Academy for Educators - under the sponsorship of the commercial, aerospace and defense units of The Boeing Company.

Space Academy for Educators is one of several highly regarded U.S. Space Camp (http://spacecamp.com/) programs for adults. It is designed to enable teachers to inspire and motivate students in math and science when they return to their classrooms. Also, the teachers will receive classroom materials to assist in developing new space- and science-based educational programs.

"We're delighted to give teachers this opportunity for real, hands-on exposure to the Nation's work in space so they can create exciting new programs for successive generations of students," said John A. McLuckey, executive vice president of Boeing Defense & Space Group. "Since 1992, we've sponsored more than 100 teachers who, in turn, have carried back the challenge of space and science to more than 12,000 students."

Teachers from Alabama, California, Georgia, Florida, Kansas, Mississippi, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Washington gathered at the U.S. Space Camp facility in Titusville, Fla., beginning Saturday, July 26. They will take part in a week-long curriculum of lectures by space experts, hands-on activities, astronaut training and simulated space missions. Included will be an extensive tour of the NASA Kennedy Space Center, site of U.S. shuttle launches.
