SEATTLE, Feb. 26, 2001 -- Azteca Airlines (Lineas Aereas Azteca) of Mexico City has ordered two Boeing Next-Generation 737-700 airplanes. The order makes Azteca -- a new regional passenger airline that will launch service next month - the first airline to operate Next-Generation 737s in Mexico.
The total order is valued at approximately $94 million, with deliveries scheduled for this year. Azteca also will operate leased 737-300s.
"We are very excited to be the first Next-Generation 737 operator in Mexico," said Rafael Rubio, president and CEO of Azteca Airlines. "The Boeing Next-Generation 737s have proven themselves as highly reliable and cost-efficient airplanes at airlines throughout the world. They're exactly the airplanes we want to ensure successful operations."
Azteca's initial route destinations will be Mexico City, Guadalajara, Tijuana, Morelia and Uruapan.
"We are honored that Azteca Airlines has chosen the Boeing 737-700," said Dan da Silva, vice president of Boeing Sales - Latin America. "The simplicity and reliability of the 737 family are major cost reducers."
The Next-Generation 737 offers the highest dispatch reliability and lowest operating costs in its class and features the most advanced design technology in the single-aisle market, such as an all-new wing and updated liquid-crystal displays in the flightdeck. The Next-Generation 737 also offers an all-new, spacious interior fashioned after the immensely popular interior of the Boeing 777.
Boeing has taken orders for more than 1,700 Next-Generation 737s, making it the fastest-selling new jetliner of all time. To date, the company has delivered more than 700 of the new 737s. Other Next-Generation operators in Latin America are BWIA International Airways, COPA Airlines, GOL Airlines, LAPA Argentina and Varig Airlines.
