Spectrolab Solar Cells Help Set Record for Fastest Ever U.S. Solar Car Race

SYLMAR, Calif. , Sept. 18, 2003 -- WINNING TECHNOLOGY -- University of Missouri-Rolla's and University of Minnesota's college students, shown above with their solar-powered cars and trophy, purchased Spectrolab solar cells to power their car via the Internet at the Spectrolab e-store. Approximately 3,000 dual-junction gallium arsenide solar cells were used to power the each of the solar-powered cars. University of Missouri-Rolla's Solar Miner IV set a record for the fastest ever US solar car race (under 52 hours for 2233 miles) and took first place at the American Solar Challenge 2003. The race, the world's longest for solar-powered vehicles, began July 13 in Chicago and followed Route 66 to Claremont, Calif.
