NASA Selects Boeing for Neptune Missions Study Grant

Return to News Release

ST. LOUIS, June 01, 2004 -- This image of the Far-Infrared and Submillimeter Interferometer telescope (FIR/SMM) shows the three light collectors and the central beam combiner. The light collectors are connected by tethers that keep them in their assigned, continually changing positions in space, as they slowly glide in a spiral motion around the beam combiner. The little yellow spheres are counterweights to keep the motion steady. The mission for the FIR/SMM is known as the Submillimeter Probe of the Evolution of Cosmic Structure (SPECS).
