LONG BEACH, Calif., May 9, 1997 -- George
Field, vice president and general manager of product support at
McDonnell Douglas' (NYSE: MD) Douglas Aircraft Company received the
1997 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Reed
Aeronautics Award for notable achievements in aeronautical science
and engineering. The award was presented at the annual AIAA Honors
Night Banquet in Washington, D.C., on May 8.
Field was honored for his contributions to numerous aerospace
projects including the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 and
MD-11 commercial airliners while serving at Douglas Aircraft Co., and
then the C-17 Globemaster III military cargo jet at Military Transport
Aircraft, both in Long Beach, Calif.
Field was nominated by Don Kozlowski, senior vice president of
McDonnell Douglas' Military Transport Aircraft division. Field was
formerly vice president and general manager of engineering and test,
and deputy program manager for the C-17 project under Kozlowski
before returning to Douglas Aircraft Co. and his current position.
The award is named for Dr. Sylvanus A. Reed, aeronautical engineer,
designer and founding member of the Institute of Aeronautical
Sciences in 1932. It honors lifelong contributions to the field of
aeronautics.
Field's citation reads: "For engineering/production turn-around on
the C-17 Globemaster III and as a leading figure in fielding the
DC-10 and MD-11 airliners." Field has also worked on the MD-12,
Saab SF-340, Fairchild Metro 3A and Fairchild F-300 and F-400.
The C-17 was awarded the 1994 Collier Trophy for "the greatest
achievement in aeronautics or astronautics in America, the value of
which has been demonstrated by actual use in the previous year."
Field first joined McDonnell Douglas in 1965.
