LONG BEACH, Calif., July 24, 1997 -- McDonnell Douglas (NYSE: MD) presented $200,000 in the form of two grants of $100,000 each to the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific and the adjacent Nautical Heritage Society during a ceremony July 23 at the Aquarium's construction site in downtown Long Beach.
The grants were presented by Don Kozlowski, senior vice president, Military Transport Aircraft, and Walt Orlowski, president, Douglas Aircraft Company. Accepting the grants were Warren Iliff, president & chief executive officer, Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific, and Steve Christman, president, The Nautical Heritage Society.
Each grant consisted of $50,000 from the Southern California-based Employees Community Fund (ECF) and a matching $50,000 from the St. Louis-based McDonnell Douglas Foundation.
McDonnell Douglas' commitment to the community includes financial support for educational, environmental and heritage programs. ECF funds come from employee contributions at all McDonnell Douglas Southern California locations, while Foundation funds are on behalf of the corporation.
The Aquarium of the Pacific is scheduled to open in June 1998. Both the Aquarium and the Maritime Education Center plan extensive educational activities, programs about the Pacific Ocean coastline environment and exhibits preserving details of the rich history of this region.
