Plans for the cooperative development
of a solar-power plant to demonstrate breakthrough U.S. and Israeli
technology will be announced Monday, March 10.
A partnership of McDonnell Douglas,
Ormat Industries, Weizmann Institute of Science and Yeda Research
and Development Ltd. has been awarded $5.3 million by the U.S.-Israel
Science and Technology Development Commission to demonstrate the
commercial feasibility of an advanced solar-power plant capable
of generating hundreds of kilowatts to tens of megawatts of power.
The news media is invited to attend
a 9 a.m. briefing in the Space Camp Habitat of the U.S. Space
and Rocket Center, 1 Tranquillity Base, Huntsville,
Ala. A ceremony will follow the briefing at 9:30 a.m. Media representatives
should arrive at the Space Camp Habitat no later than 8:45 a.m.
Dr. Mary Good, undersecretary
of the U.S. Department of Commerce; Prof. Amnon Yogev, director
of the Energy Research Center, Weizmann Institute of Science;
Drs. Robert Drubka, program manager, and James Blackmon, director
of technology development for McDonnell Douglas; Dr. Orna Berry,
chief scientist for Israel; and Yoram Yahav, advisor to the Ministry
of Industry and Trade for Israel will participate in the news
briefing.
