HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., April 3, 1997 -- More than 1,600 McDonnell Douglas (NYSE: MD) employees will be retrained with new job skills through a $992,600 award by the California Employment Training Panel (CETP).
Production workers at McDonnell Douglas Space and Defense Systems' (S&DS) Huntington Beach and Monrovia facilities will each receive more than 200 training hours. The goal of the program is to strengthen employees' job skills to enhance McDonnell Douglas' competitiveness and its role as an employer in California.
"This has given us an opportunity to put together a plan in which employees receive training to improve their skills," said Richard Noviello, division director of Production Operations. "This is a win-win situation for industry and the State of California," he added.
Most of the trainees have not been responsible for the inspection of a product, and thus have not received training for inspection and testing. Production workers with inspection and testing skills will be better equipped to ensure the manufacture of products that meet requirements.
McDonnell Douglas is the world's largest builder of military aircraft, and the third largest commercial aircraft manufacturer. Its S&DS business, headquartered in Huntington Beach, is a world leader in space transportation, producing the Delta family of expendable launch vehicles. S&DS manufactures major elements of the International Space Station as well as military command, control, communications, computer and intelligence (C4 I) systems.
CETP is a business and labor supported state agency that reimburses California employers for training new employees and retraining current employees. CETP has funded training for more than 223,000 California workers in 24,000 companies. Eligible companies that apply for CETP funds are generally those that face out-of-state competition.
