GECAS to purchase Boeing 747-8 Freighters and 777-300ERs

GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS)

Purchasing airplanes is nothing new to GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS). After all, the Stamford, CT-based company is a leading global player in commercial leasing, which owns and manages more than 1,800 airplanes.

Today’s announcement to purchase two 747-8 Freighters and eight 777-300ERs (Extended Range) marked a first for GECAS. While GECAS has ordered 777-300ERs in the past, the 747-8 Freighter is a new model for the leasing company’s portfolio. Boeing is working with GECAS to finalize the details of the agreement, at which time the order will be posted to the Boeing Orders & Deliveries website.

“We are excited about adding the 747-8 Freighter,” said Norm Liu, GECAS president and CEO. "With the cargo market recovering, the 747-8 Freighter is an excellent solution for our leasing customers. This fuel-efficient airplane provides the highest payload of any commercial freighter.”

Liu went on to say that this agreement adds to GECAS’s existing portfolio of 777s, which is a key part of its strategy to expand long-haul product offerings to satisfy customer demand.
