Sparse Optimal Control Software (SOCS) - Applications

Low-Thrust Orbit Transfer Image

A low-thrust orbit transfer from a 150 nm circular, 28.5 deg inclined park orbit to a final orbit with inclination 63.4 deg, argument of perigee 270 deg, apogee altitude 21450 nm, and perigee altitude 350 nm. A single low-thrust burn with steering optimized to minimize fuel consumed yields a sparse nonlinear programming problem with 4352 variables and 3484 nonlinear constraints. A complete description can be found in "Using Sparse Nonlinear Programming to Compute Low Thrust Orbit Transfers," J.T. Betts, The Journal of the Astronautical Sciences, Vol. 41, No. 3, July-September 1993, pp 349-371.
