Optimal Low Thrust Trajectories to the Moon
A low thrust transfer from the Earth to the Moon is described in the paper ``Optimal Low Thrust Trajectories to the Moon.'' It takes over 200 days to complete this challenging trajectory and the simulation models perturbations from the Sun, Moon, and oblate gravity. The solution was achieved by solving a large sparse optimization problem with 211031 variables and 146285 constraints. A complete description can be found in the paper and is illustrated in the animation (Note: The size of animation file is about 3.2MB. You must have RealNetworks RealPlayer or Microsoft Windows Media Player installed to view it).
