V-22 Lifts 155mm Howitzer

May 03, 1999 -- An Engineering and Manufacturing Development V-22 Osprey lifts the prototype Lightweight (LW) 155-millimeter Howitzer during external load testing in April. It's designed to replace the aging M198 Howitzer by the Joint Marine Corps and Army Howitzer Program and weighs about 9,200 lbs. EMD airplanes (# 7-10) have flown more than 1,200 flight test hours during about 590 flights.
