Maj. Troy Lanier of the Airborne Laser program office explains the Air Force's revolutinary laser-carrying aircraft to a visitor at the Airborne Laser exhibit during Public Service Recognition Week. More than 100 U.S. government organizations participated in the five-day exhibition, which was held earlier this month on the National Mall adjacent to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. The purpose of the event was to show the general public the work being done by various government agencies. The Airborne Laser, managed at Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M., is one of the Air Forcešs highest-priority programs - developing a laser-weapon system to destroy enemy theater ballistic missiles shortly after being launched.
