Nearly 30 companies in the Bay Area are contributing to the development of a revolutionary Airborne Laser defensive system designed to destroy theater ballistic missiles in their boost phase. These firms are providing a variety of components and services for the Beam Control/Fire Control System being built by Lockheed Martin Space Systems in Sunnyvale for ABL. Team ABL is comprised of the Air Force and major contractors including team leader Boeing, Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin.

"In a real sense, Silicon Valley is helping build one of the most advanced defensive systems ever developed," said Paul Shattuck, Lockheed Martin's ABL program manager, "and the program is making a positive economic impact that ripples throughout the area."

The Lockheed Martin-Sunnyvale portion of the $1.6 billion development program, which includes the Bay Area firms' work, is $325 million. The program provides some 225 jobs to the Bay Area. That total includes 135 at Lockheed Martin Space Systems in Sunnyvale and 90 at the other companies here.
