My dad, Richard (Dick) J. Alexander retired in 1987 after a 40-year career at Boeing. As a kid, I remember every day was a different story that he brought home.
My favorite was the one where as soon as he got to work one day, his supervisor told him to hop in a truck and accompany a missile that was being transported from Seattle to Florida. The supervisor promised he would call my mother and let her know not to expect Dad back home at his usual time.
In those days, there were no cellphones and the truck only stopped for gas, so we didn't hear from Dad that week. Once the Air Force accepted the missile, he flew back home.
The company was important to our family. We had a lot of medical expenses that Boeing covered and the benefits allowed my parents a comfortable retirement.
