Boeing is accelerating the Joint Force’s digital revolution

Global defense agencies are seeing their traditional technological advantages threatened by peer and near-peer adversaries. To win the future fight, they not only need cutting-edge capabilities – they need the entire development, procurement and operational lifecycle to be faster, more agile and more insightful than ever before while exceeding the most demanding levels of quality.

Boeing continues advancing – and deploying – the technology, tools and talent necessary to create a truly digital value stream from requirements definition to retirement; a production system that’s digital, scalable, modular and platform-independent; and open systems software development that enables the rapid insertion of capabilities and improvements to new and existing products.

Boeing’s first century was largely defined by its innovative aerospace products – “what we built”. Our second century is all about innovating “how we build” and delivering the capabilities customers need to meet their strategic and tactical mission objectives.

Accelerating the Digital Revolution

Boeing is accelerating the digital revolution for the Joint Force and global defense customers today. Embracing model-based engineering and virtualization, open architecture systems, and agile software development, Boeing is digitizing the entire production life cycle to deliver critical capabilities to customers when they need them.

Future programs will be designed, developed and manufactured on a digital foundation, just like the T-7A Red Hawk advanced trainer. T-7A is among the U.S. Air Force’s first aircraft, weapons, satellites and assets to be designed and built along a digital thread, embracing advanced manufacturing techniques to improve quality and enhance performance.

Using model-based engineering and 3D design tools, the T-7A represents an aircraft with a 75 percent increase in first-time quality, an 80 percent reduction in assembly hours and a process that cut software development time in half. The aircraft moved from computer screen design to first flight in just 36 months.

Building better through Boeing’s digital production system

Boeing’s production system is bringing the digital future to life today. By incorporating cloud technology and an interconnected value stream, the company is creating exact digital twins of aircraft by tail number – enabling data-driven maintenance, upgrades and enhancements both for the physical aircraft and its digital copy throughout their lifecycle.

Boeing’s factory leverages firm data standards, is networked with other factories via the cloud, and features advanced artificial intelligence to build systems more simply and efficiently. This digitization allows for modular tooling, enabling flexible, scalable production to meet rapid development and fielding or changes in customer needs and requirements. These changes are accompanied by virtual prototyping and testing, higher initial quality and greater safety. And, the system is being implemented today on new and existing programs.

Applying the digital engineering and production expertise that developed the T-7A, Airpower Teaming System and a proprietary government space system to its entire portfolio, Boeing is delivering the speed, flexibility and agility needed for today’s deterrence and the future fight.

The Boeing Software Experience

Boeing understands and embraces open architectures, agile, DevSecOps, cloud native, containers and more. That understanding extends to how software is used, deployed and evolved to meet rapidly changing mission requirements. Customers rely on Boeing software. Why?

  • Built-in security
  • Develop once, deploy everywhere
  • Total lifecycle customer engagement

Secure and transparent software development, rapid capability deployment and insertion and continuous evolution based on real-time customer feedback and machine learning. That’s how you move at the speed of relevance. That’s the Boeing software experience.

Mission Readiness Powered by Data Analytics

With the rapid proliferation of data across all aspects of the operational environment, the ability to convert data into valuable insights and decision criteria is critical. Boeing is a leader in data utilization across every aspect of development, manufacturing and operations in all domains. Decades of experience managing broad arrays of sensor types and data requirements across the defense, space and commercial markets allow Boeing to help our defense customers gain greater, more actionable insight into their platforms, operating environment or situational analysis before issues arise.

Our ability to combine global, digital engineering expertise with purpose-built applications in an open-source environment means optimized equipment to meet operational requirements, improved crew safety, lower costs and ultimately greater mission success.
