Members of the 445th Airlift Wing at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio are abuzz.

The base, home to nine C-17 Globemaster III aircraft, formally celebrated the opening of its first C-17 training center, which includes a C-17 flight and loadmaster simulator.

“It’s a state-of-the-art machine, so we’re ecstatic,” said Col. Stephen Goeman, 445th Airlift Wing Commander.

Before delivery of the newest training center in June, C-17 pilots and loadmasters located at Wright-Patt traveled to places like Jackson, Miss., to recertify and satisfy other training requirements.

According Lt. Col. Rich Klarich, a C-17 pilot at Wright-Patt, training often lasted a week when accounting for travel to and from the facility. With the new training center at Wright-Patt, that same training can be completed in as little as a day with an annual savings close to $1 million dollars.

Boeing delivered the entire training center, which included classrooms along with the hi-tech simulators. The flight simulator alone weighs about 30,000 pounds.

“This is the 23rd C-17 simulator Boeing has delivered to the U.S. Air Force,” said Tracy Mead, Boeing’s C-17 Aircrew Training Systems Program Manager.
