It’s a glimpse into the future of on-demand air deliveries. Boeing HorizonX revealed a new design concept of the Cargo Air Vehicle (CAV), which is rapidly evolving following an initial round of aerodynamic testing.
“What makes this so unique is that the design is driven by how our customers envision using the CAV. It can be tailored to meet their specific needs and requirements,” said Logan Jones, Boeing HorizonX senior director. “We are listening to what the businesses want and creating innovative air vehicle designs that meet the market demand.”
Over several months, the air vehicle’s dual rotor system successfully completed a rigorous test program inside the Boeing Vertical/Short Takeoff and Landing (V/STOL) Wind Tunnel in Ridley Park, PA.
To develop the CAV, Boeing HorizonX formed a team of engineers and experts from across the company. Researchers will continue test flights with the prototype, which will be designed to safely transport and deliver up to 500 pounds
A model of the concept, which represents one potential design of the CAV, is on display in the Boeing exhibit at the 2018 Farnborough International Airshow.
