Athens, December 15, 2021 - Boeing will donate 88.5K EUR ($100K) to the Hellenic Red Cross association in Greece in support for those affected in the Evia wildfires and the Crete earthquake earlier this year.
In the summer of 2021, the country was suffering from a total of 140 destructive wildfires where more than 125,000 hectares of forest and arable land have been burnt (the worst fire season since 2007), with over 50,000 hectares burnt in northern Evia alone. The fire destroyed about one third of the forests of Evia and thousands of people were forced to flee their homes. Additionally, in September 2021, the island of Crete had an earthquake of 5.8 Richter where thousands of homes were destroyed and hundreds of people hurt.
Boeing, in collaboration with the Hellenic Red Cross, will be donating 100 thousand US dollars (or €88.5K) where 70,000 USD will be allocated to the Evia Region wildfires and 30,000 to the Crete earthquake relief support.
In the Evia region, the donation will be providing, among others, Psychosocial First Aid (PFA), as well as Psychosocial Support (PSS) of children, parents and teachers for the management of post-traumatic stress, adaptation to the new social and economic reality and return to normalcy. Also, Boeing will be providing support of immediate need for the strengthening of the material and technical infrastructure of the schools and the educational equipment of the students in the region. The donation for the Crete earthquake will be allocated specifically to the Earthquake relief program for restoration and Humanitarian aid.
"We are deeply saddened by these disasters that hit the country and we are hoping that our donation and support will provide at least a small relief to all the people affected. Our thoughts are with all those impacted by these disasters and we are hoping towards a brighter and safer future in Greece", said Angela Natale, Boeing Southern Europe managing director.
