Gdańsk (Poland) May 9th, 2023 — Boeing [NYSE: BA], Incubator Starter and FIRST Scandinavia today celebrated the opening of an experiential classroom for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) in Gdańsk. The Mobile Newton Room offers 13-16 years old high-school students an innovative learning experience related to aviation. It will be open for almost three weeks, from May 10 to May 26.
Students from Gdańsk, and surrounding Pomeranian voivodeship participate in a 5-hour program called “Up in the Air with Numbers”. As part of this program, they calculate a flight plan for a rescue mission. In a second step, they execute this flight plan, using state-of-the-art flight simulators. Experts from leading aerospace company Boeing and Gdańsk based start-up accelerator Incubator Starter instruct the children during the mission and explain how to operate an airplane.
“We are showing young people that science and technology are not abstract concepts”, said Honorata Hencel, a Director from Boeing Poland and Head of IT for Europe & Israel. “The calculations they make allow them to fly and navigate an aircraft. Understanding that theoretical knowledge has a very practical application is important for anyone considering working in a technical field”.
Stian Elstad, Managing Director Newton Europe at FIRST Scandinavia said: “We believe that every student has talent and desire for knowledge, and they all need and deserve arenas where they can explore and continue to develop this. We have received amazing feedback from children and schools in Poland who participated in the Newton experience during the last years. We are very glad to bring this innovative learning experience to Gdańsk now, with the support from Boeing and Incubator Starter”.
The Newton Room is already fully booked. Every day, a class of 21 children will participate in the program. The classes take place in expansible containers that offer 70 square meters of STEM learning environment. The containers are situated between the Boeing and Incubator Starter building in Gdańsk.
“Being an entrepreneur is about innovation, but it is also about teamwork. Children learn both skills at the Newton Room in Gdańsk. We are glad to be part of this Newton classroom that allows us to continue our long-term activities for youth development in Gdańsk and the Pomerania region”, commented Paweł Braun, CEO of the Gdańsk Entrepreneurship Foundation, which runs Incubator Starter.
The Mobile Newton Room in Gdańsk is the fourth room opening in Poland within the Boeing-FIRST Scandinavia partnership. More than 2,000 children in Poland visited a Newton Room during the last five years. This makes it the latest milestone resulting from a $5 million investment from Boeing in 2018 to create a European Newton network with FIRST Scandinavia.
In addition to the temporary Pop-Up and Mobile Newton Rooms, several permanent Newton Rooms have been established in six European countries (Norway, Denmark, Scotland, Spain, France, and Poland). In total, more than 10,000 children in Europe benefited from the Newton experience already.
