Boeing Research & Technology-Europe

European Innovation

For over two decades Boeing’s Research & Technology arm has been delivering cutting-edge solutions at sites across Europe to tackle aviation’s greatest challenges.

We partner with European research institutes, non-profits, governments and local communities to build a more responsible and sustainable future for our industry and planet.

Our European research centers, solid partnerships and century-long innovation knowhow allows us to foster innovation, excellence and competitiveness, while making the aviation sector safer, more efficient and sustainable.

Model-based engineering.

In Spain, our engineers focus on model-based engineering, data-enabled airline services and solutions to better integrate autonomous systems in shared airspace.

Boeing Munich

In Germany, we develop drilling technology and work on materials modelling, while helping our suppliers implement technologies and qualification process.

Boeing Sheffield

In the U.K., we develop and mature machining and metal forming technologies, as well as next generation laser-powered bed fusion for additive manufacturing.

At Boeing we are determined to make flying better for the environment as part of our commitment to environmental stewardship and social progress.

One of the ways we follow up on our commitments is through investment in innovations that help to increase the total share of sustainable aviation fuel in the EU jet fuel market through projects like HIGFLIGH – part of the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme for sustainable aviation fuels research. As part of this project our goal is to develop novel technologies for Furfural-to-Jet production using scalable and resource efficient concepts within second generation biorefineries and employing feedstocks such as agricultural and forestry residues, algae and biomass wastes.

A safer airspace for all

Unmanned Aircraft Systems like air taxis, drone delivery vehicles and emergency response unmanned systems are no longer a thing of the future. To ensure that they integrate safely into Europe’s busy airspace, our research and engineering work in the region is dedicated to developing and contributing to innovations that ensure the safety of air travel for both traditional and the next generation of airspace users.

We are dedicated contributors to European Union Horizon 2020 projects such as AMU-LED - one of the largest demonstrations of mobility services with air vehicles in urban environments – where we lead the definition of a Concept of Operations for Urban Air Mobility and build new operating procedures for effective interfaces between Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs), U-Space service providers (USSPs) and other UAM authorities.

We are also leading the development of an advanced simulator of air traffic management in U-space environments funded by the Spanish Center for the Development of Technology and Industry (CDTI) in collaboration with the Galicia Regional Government's Civil UAVs Initiative (CUI) and eight other industry partners, through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Innovation partnerships

We are committed to our partnerships across Europe which power many of our efforts to make aviation a safer, more efficient and sustainable industry.

We are a founding member of the SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking - an institutionalized European public-private partnership where we join forces with the EU, EUROCONTROL and over 50 organizations covering the entire aviation value chain to apply our knowhow, experience and innovative thinking to deliver the Digital European Sky.

We also work closely with our customers and suppliers to provide innovative solutions to help make air travel more efficient and sustainable.
