Did you know Boeing’s heritage Hughes Syncom 3 satellite transmitted the world’s first live international Olympics TV broadcast?
Launched on a Douglas Delta D rocket from Cape Kennedy (now known as Cape Canaveral), on Aug. 19, 1964, the Syncom 3 satellite included a wideband channel for television — unleashing a communications revolution — making it possible for TV audiences to watch the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The satellite's operations were turned over to the Department of Defense on Jan. 1, 1965, and were operated by the DOD through 1966, far exceeding its one-year design life. Syncom 3 was turned off in April 1969 and remains in orbit to this day.
