Meet Dr. Janice Karty

Electronic and Electrical Engineering

I have always enjoyed physics and mathematics, as long as I can remember. My first love was astronomy, particularly understanding how galaxies form and evolve. But, I realized that in addition to discovering how things work, I also wanted to be instrumental in building complex systems. In my graduate studies, I developed computational software that provided electromagnetic analysis, eventually leading to my current role as Principal Senior Technical Fellow in electromagnetic effects. This field includes mitigation of electromagnetic interference and protection of aircraft systems from lightning strikes.

I love to learn and to solve problems. My work is very much like completing a puzzle — making sure all of the pieces properly fit together keeps me highly motivated and engaged. It is an exhilarating feeling when you create enduring designs the first time, but equally as rewarding to figure out why something is not going according to plan.

People in the Boeing Technical Fellowship are incredibly accomplished, and it is an honor to have been selected as a Principal Senior Technical Fellow. It is also a dream come true to be chair of the Boeing Technical Fellowship and to represent such an awesome team. The Fellowship provides technical advice and direction in solving challenges within Boeing, pioneering optimized ways forward. There is tremendous benefit in collaborating with engineers in a variety of fields, getting experts to talk with one another, and giving them the opportunity to share ideas. In sharing, you often help yourself understand what is happening in your own discipline.

While working in the aerospace industry can be challenging, we have a wealth of opportunities. There are incredible opportunities to collaborate with other disciplines and contribute to integrated technical teams working toward the same goal. Over my career I have mentored and worked with countless talented engineers, and this gives me great hope and excitement for the future of Boeing.
